1 The CRUCIBLE Fallacy Project: Slippery Slope

2 Definition of Fallacy Slippery Slope- an idea or course of action which will lead to something unacceptable, wrong, or disastrous.

3 Universal examples Direct TV commercial

4 Examples from the crucible
Elizabeth: “The Deputy Governor promise hangin’ if they’ll not confess, john. The towns gone wild, I think. She speak of Abigail, and I thought she were a saint, to hear her. Abigail brings the other girls into the court, and where she walks the crowd will part like the sea for Israel. And folks are brought before them, and if they scream and howl and fall to the floor- the person’s clapped in the jail for bewitchin’ them.” (Act 2, page 193) This quote is using slippery slope in that If people come into the court and the accused scream then they will be charged with bewitchin and thrown in jail to be hanged. Then a landslide effect will happen causing other innocent people to be accused of being a witch when really they were falsely blamed.

5 Examples from the crucible
Giles- “My proof is there! If Jacobs hangs for witch he forfeits up his property- that’s law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land!” (Act 3, page 214) This quote is using slippery slope In that Jacob hangs because Putnam was rich so Putnam gets his land. Once someone who is accused of being a witch and they deny or confess their land is forfeited. The rich can then buy the land. The rich falsely accuses neighbors for their land condemning them to death.
