The Mauryan Dynasty Chandragupta Maurya, an Indian prince, founded India’s first empire after Alexander the Great left India. Controlled the empire by having a strong army and using spies. Asoka – Mauryan Dynasty’s greatest King. Strong military leader who turned away from violence. Built hospitals and roads. After his death the dynasty 7 Empire fell.

The Gupta Empire After 500 years of fighting another Chandragupta took power and founded the Gupta Empire. Ruled for about 200 years. Grew wealthy from trade with China, and kingdoms in SE Asia. Also made money off of Pilgrims – people who visit religious sites. The golden age of art and learning was during the Gupta Empire.

Indian Literature & Science
Aryabhata – leading mathematician in Gupta Empire. 1st scientist to use Algebra. Developed the idea of Zero and a symbol to represent it. Created symbols for 1-9. Invented algorithms- series of steps that solve a problem.
