How do I analyse data? Module 5

How do I analyse data?

Aims:  To consider issues relating to data analysis  To further develop knowledge about the process of data analysis

This module will consist of:  An overview of curriculum accountability and its implications for teachers’ work  Two small group activities during which data and data sources will be examined

Introduction Curriculum accountability within the SACSA Framework means: u Providing an account of learners’ progress and achievement u Accounting for the steps taken to improve learner achievement The analysis of data for the class and each individual learner supports this.

The Curriculum Accountability Statement in the SACSA Framework states that: ‘All learners can expect responsive and timely intervention and support programs….’ Complete the following activity in pairs. Use a recent experience where you have used learner achievement data to support a learner or group of learners to show how you analysed and used the data. Your description could include: u The nature of the data u The number of sources of data u Length of time data was gathered u What comparisons did you set up in using the data?

Secondary example For this activity, examine the following scenario and discuss in detail. The following table was produced from the first term year 8 English reports for a large secondary school. A great deal of effort went into the transition from primary school and every attempt was made to ensure all the classes were of a similar composition, that is, each class was intended to be a mixed ability group. The students followed essentially the same program in the first term. Develop an analysis from a range of perspectives

Primary example In this activity, examine and discuss the following graphs. The two graphs show the year 3 (on left) and year 5 (on right) literacy results for year 2000 at a large primary school. The red (narrow band) is the state percentage. Make an analysis of this information.

Planning and directions  Select a current school issue and gather data for it  Do an analysis of the data from a range of perspectives and from there plan a course of action(s)  Develop a strategy to monitor progress on the issue  Make a time to review the issue and process used
