2  Lewis and Clark were asked by President Thomas Jefferson after the Louisiana Purchase to explore and map the wild west of North America.

4  March 6,1801: Lewis is asked by Jefferson to be his Secretary  July 4, 1803:Louisiana Purchase  Spring 1804: Lewis wrights to ask William Clark to join and shore command  Fall/Winter 1803: Camp Wood established upstream from St. Louis  May 14, 1804: Expedition begins  July 4, 1804: Expedition marks 4 th of July west of the Mississippi by firing the keelboats cannon  October 11, 1809: Lewis commits suicide
