3. What is Guided Reading? Guided Reading is a method of teaching reading. Guided Reading is based on educational research. Guided Reading is considered a Best Practice for teaching literacy.

4. Why use Guided Reading? Guided Reading helps students use strategies independently and become fluent, skilled readers. Guided Reading differentiates, or personalizes, instruction in order to accommodate the learning needs of all students.

5. Guided Reading’s Principles There are three basic principles of Guided Reading. These principles include: –Groups –Text –Strategies

6. Principle # 1 Groups –The students in the groups are at the same ability. –The students in the groups have similar needs. –The groups are relatively small. –The groups are very flexible.

7. Principle # 2 Texts –The teacher selects texts at the instructional level of the group. –The teacher provides fiction and non-fiction texts. –The teacher provides texts that interest the group.

8. Principle # 3 Strategies –Students learn new strategies as they read. –The strategies involve phonics and vocabulary. –The strategies also include reading comprehension skills.

9. What are the Components? Guided Reading has three components. These components are: –Before reading5-10 minutes –During reading20-25 minutes –After reading5-10 minutes

10. Before Reading The teacher develops these strategies before reading: –Building background –Developing vocabulary –Making predictions –Understanding purposes for reading –Identifying author's purpose

11. During Reading The teacher develops these strategies during reading: –Self-assessing one’s reading –Using context clues, pictures, and phonics cues. –Doing fix-up strategies such as slowing down, reading on then going back, and re-reading.

12. After Reading The teacher develops these strategies after reading: –Making connections among text features –Making inferences –Confirming predictions –Creating ideas and/or questions for discussion –Providing support from the text –Recognizing the difference between fact and opinion

13. When is Guided Reading? Guided Reading is a daily activity. Mrs. Westgard’s homeroom will enjoy Guided Reading each morning. Mrs. Rieke’s class will enjoy Guided Reading every afternoon.

14. What Skills Are Addressed? Phonics – The patterns of letters and sounds Fluency –The speed and expression of reading Comprehension –The understanding of the text Vocabulary –The knowledge of word parts and word meanings

15. Is Guided Reading Graded? Guided Reading is graded using: –teacher’s daily notes –teacher’s records during reading –Klein’s Guided Reading rubric –students' reading responses

16. Is Guided Reading Helpful? Guided Reading helps students have positive attitudes about reading. Guided Reading helps students respond to the ideas in the texts. Guided Reading helps students develop skills to explore language, to think critically, and to access information and use it effectively.
