Research Results in Creating Life Long Readers Studies have shown that programs such as Accelerated Reader have enhanced students reading interest.

Intrinsic motivation has been proven to be the most long lasting reward method to encourage a lasting love of reading. Teaching reading through assigned text and answering follow up questions is an older spin on reading strategies. This approach assesses literal understanding, it doesn’t teach reading. Students who are able to voice their thoughts on the text they are reading are more inclined to continue reading on their own.

Trivia games and puppet shows are good ways to assess student’s reading comprehension and encourage students to read so they will succeed at these activities.

Teach students to draw inferences by predicting based on their thoughts and opinions about the text.
