Quotation “The smell of chocolate is overwhelming, the rich fleshy scent of it which drags down the throat in an exquisite trail of sweetness. Try me. Test me. Taste me. Its song is louder than ever, here in the very nest of temptation. I could reach out a hand in any direction and pick up one of these forbidden fruits, taste its secret flesh. The thought pierces me in a thousand places. Try me. Test me. Taste me. No-one would be any the wiser. Try me. Test me. Taste me. Why not?“ (page 310)

What we want to tell you about the book ─In the book the story is told in two voices (by two main characters) 1) Vianne Rocher ─tells a story about her arrival to the French village where she tries to encourage the inhabitants to be independent. ─remembers her mother and the magic in her family 2) Francis Reynaud ─wants to retain his power upon the inhabitants of the village ─talks to God

From the author’s point of view ─Family members are portrayed in the book ─Strong influence of Joanne’s great-grandmother ─Dateless – no concrete setting ─How the arrival of a single individual can affect a small community ─Magic of everyday things is accessible to everyone ─Human qualities – fear of feelings versus kindness and understanding ─Desire for control and urging people versus friendly encouragement

What we didn‘t know before we read Chocolat ─truffle → čokoládové lanýže ─cocoa solid → kakaová hmota ─batch → dávka (várka) ─fondant → fondán ─cider → mošt

Conclusion ─Chocolate unleashes the conflict between Vianne with her customers and the town's priest Francise Reynaud who is supported by the rest of the inhabitants ─Vianne manages to release the town from the big influence of the priest
