1 Airbus Status on ADS-B In / Out Update
ASAS Thematic Network Presented by Stéphane Marché Airbus Engineering - Avionics Airbus Status on ADS-B In / Out Update Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) ASAS TN Paris April 2008

2 Airbus Product Line A380 Family A340 Family A350 Family A330 Family A320 Family Freighters Biggest backlog ever 7194 aircraft sold customers delivered 271 operators Airbus objective : Develop ADS-B (Out and In) solutions for the whole fly by wire family => Step Approach ASAS TN Paris April 2008

3 ADS-B Airbus roadmap Step 4. ASAS SEPARATION
A/C instructed to maintain Separation with other aircraft ADS-B ADS-B Step 2. ATSAW Display of other aircraft ADS-B Info in the cockpit AAL1255 +30  Step 3. ASAS SPACING A/C instructed to maintain Spacing with target aircraft AFR6512 A320 M Step 1. ADS-B Out A/C information broadcasted for ground use in a first step ADS-B ADS-B Receiver Air Traffic Control ASAS TN Paris April 2008

4 ADS-B Step 1 : ADS-B OUT New!
Certification for Non Radar Airspace operations (ED126 document) Certification achieved on A380 in 2007 A380 is the first aircraft certified for Non Radar Operations (with DO-260A) Certification achieved on A318/319/320/321, A330/A340 family (with DO-260) in early 2008 Allow to respond to initial needs : Canada, Australia, Europe, etc. ASAS TN Paris April 2008

5 ADS-B Step 2 : ATSAW New! ATSAW is achievable in the short term
Not demanding (cert. level, ADS-B performance data) Provides its own benefits Helps gaining experience & confidence (flight crew, technical) on ASAS Target date for certification on Airbus aircraft Airborne use => 2009 Flight tests conducted since July 2007 with flight test on A320 then A340/600 aircraft ASAS TN Paris April 2008

6 ADS-B Step 2 : ATSAW in A320/A340 cockpit
Traffic Selector ADS-B Traffic on Navigation Display Additional information on MCDU Fully integrated solution Traffic displayed on the primary field of view Limited impact (no new equipment) High commonality with A380&A350 solution ASAS TN Paris April 2008

7 ADS-B Step 2 : ATSAW New! Promising benefits
Oceanic : Fuel burn reductions Visual Separation Approaches (e.g Frankfurt, USA) : Capacity increase Traffic Awareness on Surface : Enhanced safety In all environments => Enhanced safety CRISTAL ATSAW (EUROCONTROL, DSNA / Airbus / EGIS AVIA) Use of ATSAW in continental environment DSNA ATC simulator, Airbus integration simulator (Honeywell Traffic Computer) Positive impact of ATSAW for safety and efficiency Both from ATC Controllers and Pilots perspective => Report on Eurocontrol CASCADE website ASAS TN Paris April 2008

8 ADS-B Step 2 : Example of ATSAW benefits Oceanic environment
ATSAW Only Use of ATSAW to detect climb opportunities Current separation minima Current phraseology ATSAW – In Trail Procedure (ITP) Implementation of a new procedure Based on ATSAW New separation standard during the climb New phraseology ASAS TN Paris April 2008

9 ADS-B Step 2 : Example of ATSAW benefits Oceanic environment
1]. ATSAW : Detect Climb Opportunity ATSAW combined with Datalink Communications allows to obtain better Flight Levels 2]. Datalink Communication ASAS TN Paris April 2008

10 ADS-B Step 2 : CRISTAL ITP Project New!
Definition phase => Using RFG ATSA-ITP OSED Airbus / Shanwick connected simulations : Oct 2007 Objectives Assess ITP Validation Objectives Prepare Revenue A/C phase Operationally realistic scenarios Airbus / Reykjavik connected simulations : Dec 2007 Objective was to prepare Flight Test Reykjavik simulations and training : Jan 2008 Controller training before the flight test Operational evaluations ASAS TN Paris April 2008

11 ADS-B Step 2 : CRISTAL ITP Flight test phase
Brand New! Safety guaranted by radar coverage Several Flight Test on March 26th SUCCESSFUL ACSS Traffic Computer Airborne ADS-B Recordings Ground Surveillance Recording ALTICODE develops recording analysis Tools ASAS TN Paris April 2008

12 ADS-B Step 2 : CRISTAL ITP Project
CRISTAL ITP is a key project for ASAS First time a new separation standard is defined based on ADS-B In Operational validation conducted in parallel with avionics development Positive feedbacks from controllers and pilots Next steps Results consolidation until mid 2008 Preparation of an airline ITP Pionneer project until End 2008 Pionneer airline ITP project in 2009 ASAS TN Paris April 2008

13 ADS-B Step 2 : ATSAW on Airport Surface
MOVING MAP (provided by On-board Airport Navigation System/OANS) + TRAFFIC Study : Is ADS-B quality sufficient for Airport Surface needs ? ASAS TN Paris April 2008

14 ADS-B Step 3 : ASAS Spacing
Promising benefits Capacity / Regularity due to less radar vectoring Combined with CDA => may reduce fuel consumption and emissions Probably more beneficial at secondary airports Airbus target Spacing application for pioneers in the 2013 timeframe Applications in Approach and Oceanic environments Automated solution with limited impact : Software only, using ATSAW baseline Procedural and ground system impacts To be addressed in parallel by ANSPs within SESAR ASAS TN Paris April 2008

15 ADS-B Step 4 : ASAS Separation
Principle The controller delegates separation relative to designated aircraft through a new clearance The controller is responsible for providing separation from other aircraft ASAS Separation is envisaged for the 2020 timeframe E.g. Responsibility to “Remain behind” a target entirely transferred to the aircraft in all weather conditions Concept and associated transitions to be refined within specific SESAR projects ASAS TN Paris April 2008

16 Airbus Status on ADS-B : Conclusion
Step 1. ADS-B Out A/C information broadcasted for ground use in a first step A380 : Cert in 2007 A320/A330/A340 : Cert Q1 2008 Development launched Test A/C flying since 2007 Cert Target date : 2009 Step 2. ATSAW Display of other aircraft ADS-B Info in the cockpit AAL1255 +30  AFR6512 A320 M Step 3. ASAS SPACING A/C instructed to maintain Spacing with target aircraft Part of mid-term baseline of SESAR Airbus target : 2013 Airbus fully involved in ADS-B development SESAR and NEXTGEN should drive ASAS development Step 4. ASAS SEPARATION A/C instructed to maintain Separation with other aircraft To be refined Airbus in line with SESAR target ASAS TN Paris April 2008
