How many people are in the United States illegally? What should happen to those people? What should our overall policy on immigration be? Wednesday, November 28th

After today… Students will look at LA immigration patterns. Students will find and analyze political cartoons on immigration. Students will explore both sides of the USA immigration debate.

Homework Read pages 155-161 in textbook on Geopolitical Framework. Complete the Guided Reading handout for this section. Due on Thursday, November 29th

Analyze The Demographic Indicator Table 4.1 from page #142. Make two observations based upon this chart. Next turn to page #89 and look at Table 3.1 Make a comparison between your earlier observations and the chart showing population in the United States.

Class Notes The 1960’s and 1970’s were a time of tremendous population growth in most parts of Latin America. The 1990’s and 2000’s have generally seen declining rates of fertility in this region. Exceptions: Guatemala & Bolivia – two rural countries with high Amerindian populations.

Class Notes After gaining their independence from Iberian (European) countries many of LA America’s new leaders promoted immigration from European countries. From the 1870’s to 1930’s large numbers of Italians, Portuguese, Spanish, and Germans immigrated to Latin America. Especially Southern Cone countries like Argentina

Class Note Between 1908 and 1978 a quarter million Japanese immigrated to Brazil which is now home to 1.3 million people of Japanese descent. In more recent years much of this immigration has come from South Korea. Former President of Peru – Alberto Fujimori

Computer Work Find 2 political cartoons on the topic of IMMIGRATION. Cut & Paste them into a WORD document. Give a brief (2 or 3 sentences) analysis of the point that the artist is trying to make.

Class Notes Migration occurs within the region of Latin America due to shifting economic and political realities. EG – Civil War in El Salvador (PUSH). EG – Venezuela’s oil boom (PULL).

However… Americans are most familiar with immigration INTO the United States from Latin America. While the majority of Hispanic immigrants in the USA are Mexican not all immigrants from this region are Mexican. Hispanics are the fastest growing segment of the USA’s population.
