2 Charles I  Monarch of England, Scotland and Ireland until 1649  Second son of King James VI of Scotland  Married Bourbon princess Henrietta Maria of France  Quarrelled with the Parliament of England  Puritans and Calvinists thought his views were too Catholic  Fought the armies of the English and Scottish parliaments from1642  Defeated in 1645  Executed in January 1649
