INSECT INVESTIGATION

Your Tasks  As an Insect Investigator, you will complete the following tasks:  1. Choose an insect or arachnid and research it. You can use the websites in the resources section and books. You will record the information you find out on the graphic organizer.  2. Draw a picture of the Anatomy of your insect or arachnid.  3. Draw a picture of the Life Cycle

Process  Process #1  Step 1: Choose an insect or arachnid.  Pick one insect or arachnid to learn information about.  Step 2: Research your insect or arachnid.  Use the graphic organizer ( Insect Information Web.doc )to find out about its habitat, diet, and lifespan. Insect Information Web.doc

Process  Process #2 --- Draw the Anatomy  Step 1: Learn about the body parts of your insect or arachnid.  Go to the websites to learn about the body of your insect or arachnid.  Enchanted Learning Enchanted Learning  National Geographic Kids National Geographic Kids  Bug Guide (pictures) Bug Guide  Bug Anatomy Bug Anatomy  Insects & Bugs Insects & Bugs  Yahoo Kids - Insects Yahoo Kids - Insects  Insecta-Inspecta Insecta-Inspecta  Virtual Insectary Virtual Insectary  How many body parts and legs does it have?  Does it have wings?  What do the eyes look like?  Step 2: Draw a picture of it and label it.

Process  Look at some examples of other students drawings Insectmania - Bug Pixels Evaluate 2 of the drawings. Use the Evaluation Page.doc from Mrs. Domino to give your opinion. Insectmania - Bug Pixels Evaluation Page.doc  Use pencils, crayons, or markers to draw a picture of your insect or arachnid. Or you could use KidPix or the Paint program to draw your picture.  Label all the parts.

Process  Process #3 --- Draw the Life Cycle  Step 1: Learn about the Life Cycle of your insect or arachnid.  Go to the websites in Process #2 section to learn about the life cycle.  How many stages does it have?  What are the stages?  How does it change?

Process  Step 2: Draw a picture of the life cycle and label it.  Use pencils, crayons, or markers to draw a picture of your insect or arachnid's life cycle. Or you could use a computer program such as KidPix or Paint to do your drawings.  Draw arrows to show which stage happens next.  Label the parts of the life cycle

Congratulations!  You have successfully completed your investigative work. You have shown that you are able to identify insect body parts and life cycles. Great Work! You are now one step closer to becoming an entomologist. For this project you studied and became an expert on one insect. I hope you continue your study by learning about other insects and arachnids. Have fun!  Scholastic Q and AScholastic Q and A  Fun Ant Facts Fun Ant Facts  Cool Bug Facts Cool Bug Facts

by Jessica Domino, Birkes Elementary  Teacher Introduction  In this lesson, students will research one insect or arachnid. They will identify body parts and stages in the life cycle.   An extension of this will be:  making a presentation board  making a model of their insect or arachnid  categorizing the class's choices as harmful, helpful, or both Helpful or Harmful Insects  categorizing the class's choices according to defenses  categorizing the class's choices biting or non-biting  writing a letter to an exterminator defending themselves as to why they shouldn't be exterminated  writing a cinquain poem  have a presentation for parents and administrators
