Do you drink bottled water exclusively over tap water, or do you prefer tap water to bottled water? *Think about why you pick either option! Write 4-5 sentences! DO-NOW (WRITE IT IN YOUR “DO-NOW” SECTION!)
3
I NEED 4 PEOPLE TO SHARE THEIR RESPONSES!
4
“ Evaluate the reasoning in arguments in which fact and opinion are intermingled or when conclusions do not follow logically from the evidence given.” (MN Science Standards) What the heck does that mean? LEARNING OBJECTIVE
5
“Our goal is to take a scientific claim and see whether it makes sense. We will be able to take a statement and figure out whether it is opinion or fact.” IN YOUR NOTES SECTION!
6
It’s cleaner Tastes better More natural WHAT ARE SOME CLAIMS YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT BOTTLED WATER VS TAP WATER?

HAVING A SCIENTIFIC MIND! Science is about discussions! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHL_4DGsntE

Scientists cannot be stubborn when it comes to their data. IMPORTANT POINT
11
Scientists cannot be stubborn when it comes to their data. Science is all about proving your data wrong! IMPORTANT POINT– WRITE IT IN YOUR NOTES!
12
In science, it’s a lot easier to prove something WRONG than it is to prove something right.
16
What is a “logic?” -Raise your hand quietly if you think you have a definition!
17
Logic: Logic is the science of reasoning. Logic helps people decide whether something is true or false. DEFINITION OF THE DAY (WRITE IN YOUR BINDER)
18
No reptiles have fur. All snakes are reptiles. No snakes have fur.
19
But Mr. Herath…. WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH SCIENCE?!?!?
20
A good scientist is like a good detective. You have to figure out all of your clues, figure out what’s important and what’s not, and come up with a conclusion!
21
Mr. Whelan yells “JUMP!” at the frog and the frog jumps one meter. Then he cuts off one of the frog’s legs, yells “JUMP!” and the frog jumps half a meter. Then he cuts off another of the frog’s legs, yells “JUMP!” and the frog jumps a fifth of a meter. Then he cuts off a third leg, yells “JUMP!” and the frog does not jump. He yells “JUMP!” again, and the frog does not jump. “Aha!” he says. “I have my result!” So he carefully writes in his lab book: “When three legs are removed, a frog becomes deaf.” A BAD SCIENCE JOKE… *GROAN
22
What’s a better conclusion to reach? WHAT DO YOU THINK?
23
Raise your hands! WHAT DO YOU THINK?

A BAD SCIENCE JOKE… *GROAN

Science is based on arguments. Scientists love to prove each other wrong, since it gives them the best possible answers! Scientists use logic to help figure out if something makes sense. Logic is the use of reasoning to make sure something makes sense or not. IMPORTANT POINTS FOR TODAY
