IEEE Standards Education Steve Mills and David Law April 2008: IEEE Region 8 Meeting

Standards Education Committee l Joint committee of IEEE Educational Activities Board and IEEE Standards Association Board l Mission (1) Secure and disseminate learning materials on the application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs. (2) Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice. (3) Lead other education initiatives planned jointly by EAB and the SA as needed.

IEEE’s Key Interests in Education about Standards l At the university level l Development of curricula l Accreditation criteria l Providing an “entry point” to the world of standards l At the post-university level (continuing education) l Familiarizing engineers with the standard development process l Education about specific standards (e.g., the IEEE 802 family)

Target Audiences l Undergraduate Students l Graduate students l Entry-level technology professionals l Candidates for licensure l Experienced technology professionals l Standards developers l Product developers l Standards managers l Marketing professionals l Business leaders l SSO/SDO l Committee leaders l Committee participants l Governance participants

Vision for Standards Education Web Portal l A curriculum development effort funded in part by a United States National Science Foundation grant l Aim is to provide university educators and students with opportunities to learn how to read, understand, and apply standards l Updated web portal is in development with the aim of delivering state-of-the art content on Standards Education

IEEE Standards Education Portal l Goal: Establish the IEEE as the global one-stop source for information on education about standards l More content for students and educators l Supporting the incorporation of the teaching of standards in the undergraduate engineering and engineering technology programs l About 450 schools worldwide have full access to IEEE standards through the IEEE/IET Electronic Library l About 10 schools make use of this feature… l Increase content useful to the practicing professional l Standards, their applications, and their impact on designing new products, processes, and services

Main Sections of Standards Education Web Portal l Tutorials and Case Illustrations l Tutorials are online comprehensive learning modules that provide guidance in how to assemble and apply standards appropriate to the development of a product or process l The Role of Standards in Engineering and Technology l The Role of Standards in Cellular Telephony l Tutorials in Power Engineering and System Verilog domains coming soon l Case Illustrations are examples of the application of standards in a real-world context l Wireless Router Case Illustration l Multimode Mobile Phone Case Illustration

Main Sections of Standards Education Web Portal l Student Application Papers l Illustrate how specific standards were applied to a task in the classroom, with students and/or faculty describing the way in which standards impacted the design process l Submitted by students and/or their faculty mentors l Now Available: “Applications of IEEE 802.11b Wireless Standards in the Realization of a New Service Paradigm for New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway” l Glossary of key standards terms l Reference Guide l Alphabetical listing of standards development bodies and standards-related terminologies – soon to be categorized by technical domain l News and Features l Gateway to other learning opportunities

IEEE Standards Education University Level Education http://www.ieee.org/portal/cms_docs_iportals/iportals/education /setf/index.html

Challenges at the University Level l Many academics and practitioners do not understand the centrality of standards in the discipline l Standards are seen as the opposite of creativity in design l In many curricula, economic constraints, legal constraints, compliance and interoperability are considered secondary l..and sometimes absent l Techniques and devices based on standards are often taught with little or no regard to standards l …taught without referring to the standardization infrastructure l Many graduating students have never seen a standard, do not know how to tackle one or find one l Standards are often not used in “capstone” projects of Engineering programs University Level Education

Addressing the Challenges l Development of Standards Curriculum for undergraduate students l A policy paper on the role of Standards in academic programs in Engineering, Technology and Computing University Level Education

IEEE Position Paper on Standards in the Curriculum l Part of the work plan of the IEEE Standards Education Committee l Will state the desired role of technical standards in the academic curriculum l Programs in engineering and computer science l Will be used in model curriculum development and in discussions with accrediting bodies University Level Education

More Challenges l Industry technical professionals often assume that standardization is performed by large corporations and the government l Professionals complain that information about standards updates never gets to them l It is often difficult to understand interrelationship between standards l Standards are viewed as not being user-friendly Continuing Education

Addressing Standards Education for Practitioners l Workshops on standards are demanded by the IEEE membership l The number one area requested for continuing education is face to face workshops and conferences l First standards education workshop held in 2007 l Standards Education Committee planning future standards workshops, seminars and conferences l “Expert Now” online learning courses on standards Continuing Education

First Workshop on Standards l First joint Educational Activities and Standards Association sponsored workshop took place in Washington DC in November 2007 l Held at same venue as IEEE Globecom l Topic was the IEEE 802 Family of Standards, focusing primarily on the IEEE 802 wireless technology Continuing Education

“Attend this workshop to gain an understanding of...” l Six speakers and panel session l Detailed sessions on: l Assessing the Impact of IEEE 802 Standards on Society l The Strategic Value of Standards l How to use IEEE 802.11 WLAN Standards for Wi-Fi Solutions in your work today and in the future l What IEEE 802.16 means in the marketplace today and why the development of its next generation has been initiated l How to use performance requirements and verification of IEEE 802 wireless technologies l The development of standards for unlicensed spectrum, primarily for WPAN applications Continuing Education

IEEE Expert Now l Hour-long learning modules developed by leading experts recognized in their fields l Professionally produced, IEEE conference quality education that is accessible to customers world-wide 24 hours a day, 7 days a week l Dynamic interface with audio, animation, engaging graphics, assessment, glossary, and references l Optional coninuing education units (CEUs) for maintaining professional licensure Continuing Education

l Meets the continuing education needs of IEEE Members and Customers l Provides learning opportunities in manageable, one hour courses l Facilitates IEEE becoming the marketplace leader in providing high-quality e-learning services for practicing engineers, scientists and researchers l Creates an additional revenue stream for IEEE Societies and Councils Objectives

Subject Areas Featured in the Collection to date l Aerospace l Artificial Intelligence l Biomedical Engineering l Biometrics l Circuits & Devices l Communications l Computing l Instrumentation & Measurement l Lasers & Optics l Management / Professional Development l Microwave Theory & Techniques l Power / Power Electronics l Robotics & Automation l Reliability l Signal Processing l Standards l Vehicular Technology
