1 Julington Creek NEWSLETTER News about the collective work at the Julington Creek church of Christ and updates on individuals and families. Volume 2 Issue 8February 24, 2013 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. James. 1:21-22. True Christians are familiar with the words of James in the verses above. We know of the evil of hearing only as opposed to actually practicing what God tells us. Notice carefully in v21 that the pathway to action involves the humble acceptance of God’s will for my life. I must lay aside my desire to “make things work” in my life and allow God to work things for me. I can tell you, that takes practice! After a humble acceptance of His righteous commands, I must “do” what I have learned is right. The person who hears the word and fails to comply is self-deceived. Apathy and complacency will cause us to overlook things that God will never overlook. If careless, I can deceive myself into thinking I am in a right relationship with God when, in fact, I am not doing God’s will and am, therefore, not accepted by Him. It is possible for a person to attend a hundred Bible classes each year, listen to a hundred sermons every year, never miss an assembly of the saints and yet not “be blessed” (v25) in his/her life. How could that be possible? The answer is in these verses in James. While amassing knowledge through hearing and learning I have the inescapable responsibility to put into practice what I have learned from the Spirit’s message. If I do not, I have “deluded” myself. Think for a moment about the many things you have learned from the Bible in your lifetime. Ask yourself, “Are there things I still refuse to DO?” Perhaps fear or indifference has robbed you of the blessing of peace of mind. It is never too late to begin doing the will of God. I’ve heard people talk about “jail house religion” when describing an inmate who has a temporary religious experience that proves shallow and un-sustaining. James is describing a “church house religion” that loves to hear but is too shallow and proud to actually “do.” My righteousness MUST extend beyond the church house walls and into every facet of my life; otherwise, my service to Christ is but a sham.
