Documentation for Research Papers MLA Format: in-text reference, and Works Cited page

Essay with No Works Cited Page FTR = Full author’s name and full title of source LTR = Later time reference, family name in sentence + page number in brackets or family name in brackets + page number. (The source information is included in the text of your essay because there is no Works Cited page.)

Essay With Works Cited Page Options: FTR = Full author’s name with full title of source LTR = Later time reference, family name in sentence or in brackets + page number. RPF = Research Paper Format

RPF (i) Indicate full name of the author but not the title of the article or source. Identity the author’s expertise or background. Say who he or she is. Include page number reference in brackets at end of sentence. (ii) Indicate family name in brackets + page number at the end of the sentence. No other identification is necessary.

Examples using RPF format Gerard Jones, a professional writer, makes the point that “violence in the media creates a refuge for children to develop their skills of adaptation to society”(321) (This is a first time citation but without any details about the title of the source.) It is clear that “violence in the media creates a refuge for children to develop their skills of adaptation to society” (Jones 321) (This could also be a first time or a later time citation.) (All the details of the source can be found in the Works Cited page.)

Choose Variety in documentation RPF is a convenient format for longer papers in which there is a Works Cited page. One good choice is to use FTR and LTR for variety. Doing so makes the in-text citations more interesting, and, therefore, adds and effective style to your paper.
