50 Fantastic Middle School Art Lessons
2
Andy Warhol Inspired Pop Art -Materials: pencil, 18” x 12” drawing paper, tempera paint, paintbrushes -Students find a popular or iconic symbol to use as the inspiration for their repeated image. -The teacher will take the pop images to the copier, resize them to fit a standard size piece of paper, and redistribute them to the students. -Fold the large paper in ½ horizontally and vertically to create lines of symmetry and four separate quadrants. -The students will use a pencil to trace the copied image into each of the four quadrants using a light table or well lit window. -Paint each quadrant using a limited palate, and try to change the use of the colors in each of the quadrants so that no two are alike.

Halloween Candy: -Materials: pencil, watercolor paint, paintbrushes, palate, 12” x 18” watercolor paper, used candy wrappers. -Students bring in wrappers from their favorite candy received on Halloween, emptied of course, and the back of the wrapper is removed. -Use a light-table or window to trace the boarder, letters, and any other details onto the paper. Try to overlap some, crop some off the edge, and have some open or ripped. -Teach “large brush: for larger areas”, and “small brush: for smaller areas”, and stress accurate color matching, and these paintings will look amazingly realistic.

Grandma Moses Inspired Town Materials: 12” x 18” drawing paper, pencil, crayons and/or colored pencils, black permanent marker -Teach about the life and artwork of the American folk artist: “Grandma Moses” and her unique style of painting small towns and rural landscapes. -Teach the basic Illusions of space: Size, value, overlapping, placement, focus, and linear perspective. -Teach how to make her signature style of house (although often incorrect perspective, the students can make these with ease), and how she made trees, hills, and more. -Draw the basic forms in pencil first, then color, and lastly outline in black marker for a crisp finished feel.
