November 17, 2014 Homework : None Do Now: Update T.O.C pg. 34 Compounds/Ratios  Open binder to pg. 33- NaCl Flow Chart  Trade it with a partner- Check for missing information- NEATLY- circle incorrect or missing information- put a check mark for completion  Once done -One partner – Get your and your partners lab journal from bin

Let’s Review the Lab

Based off of what you see- Answer 1) What two elements are these Bohr diagram representing? 2) What type of bond am I?---Why?

Self Check-Review  Complete Check-in slip by filling in the blanks to complete the sentence with the correct term.  Open textbook to pg. 16 and begin reading just pg. 16

Compounds and Ratios  A ratio compares two numbers. It tells you how much you have of one item compared to the amount of another.  Who can describe the ratios of boys verses girls in this class?

Compounds as Ratios  Compound is a substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a specific ratio, or proportion.  Examples: CO 2, H 2 O, CH 4  Now Try: C 3 H 8 O (Rubbing Alcohol) Table Sugar C 12 H 22 O 11

How does Water Change?  On pg. 35 Write and answer this question:  Has water changed into a new substance(Something new) when it changes from a liquid to a solid, for example from rain to snow/ice? Support your answer  No water has not changed into a new substance, it just changes forms because of how the molecule’s movement changes, but it is still H 2 O, 2 parts Hydrogen and 1 part Oxygen

How does matter change?  Physical Change-  Chemical Change- Open textbook to pg. 17- Look at figure 3- What are two states of water shown in the photograph?

Physical Change Changes the form or appearance of a material, but does not convert (Change) the material into a new substance. (Can be reversed) Some Examples:  Crumbling up paper, breaking a pencil, dissolving salt into water  Change of State  Solid, liquid, gas

Chemical Change A Change in matter that forms one or more new substances- Occurs during a chemical reaction- can not be reversed(turned back into the orig. substance). Ex: Baking a cake, cooking an egg, burning wood, corrosion- rusting
