A.I. Artificial Intelligence Codes and Conventions Part 2 Question 1 of Genre Paper

Artificial Intelligence Is the idea of non-organic constructions which can think for themselves like humans. Sci-Fi films contain A.I. A.I. also reveals the concept of ‘over- reliance on technology’. Storylines often include A.I. that has rebelled against human control and caused havoc for the human race. A.I. were originally created by humans as a slave (‘robota’ means slave in Russian).

Types of A.I. Cyborgs – an organism with both natural/organic and artificial/synthetic systems. Indestructible metal skeleton covered by ‘flesh/skin’ outer layer.

Androids – designed to look and act like humans. In Blade Runner these ‘replicants’ are bioengineered and are identical to adult humans. However, They have superior strength, agility, and variable intelligence depending on the model. Actual Android designed in Korea You’re my special friend Rachel

Robots – are made of entirely non- organic materials or are an electrical- mechanical system.

So in the films we have: Metropolis – Evil Maria is a ……….? Blade Runner – Roy Batty, Pris, Zhora, Leon and Rachel are …….? The Matrix – the Real World reveals that the human race is controlled by…..?

Metropolis – Evil Maria

Blade Runner - Replicants You may want to draw shots of the laboratory with the eyeball or the interrogation scene with Voight Kampff machine also.

The Matrix - Robots

Technology Concepts OVER-RELIANCE – Man has played ‘God’ with the creation of ‘machines’ and as a consequence has grown too dependent on them. Like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein gothic novel ‘man’ has created a ‘monster’. The invention of technology itself is the cause of human’s downfall. There are instances in the films where the A.I. grow greater awareness/evolution and threaten/ challenge humans. The actual ‘difference’ between human and machine in some films is debatable in terms of consciousness, morality, empathy, and free will. ENVIRONMENT DEGRADATION – caused through industrial pollution which has had averse affects on the planet Earth. The Matrix shows a landscape (explained in Animatrix) of how humans ‘scorched the skies’ with (nuclear) weaponry. It is an uninhabitable extreme. Technology’s advancement and scale has resulted in such effects like: pollution, global warming, dimming, and extinction.
