Multiplying a Polynomial by a Monomial
Example. -3x2(4x2 + 6x – 8) You can use distribution to find the product. Multiply -3x2(4x2) = -12x4 Multiply -3x2(6x) = -18x3 Multiply -3x2(-8) = 24x2 Write your answer in standard form (descending order) -12x4 – 18x3 + 24x2 *REMEMBER THE RULES OF EXPONENTS*
5
Simplifying Example #2 Simplify -2(4x2 + 5x) – x(x2 + 6x) First do the multiplication for the first term: -2(4x2 + 5x) -8x2 – 10x Then do the multiplication for the second term: – x(x2 + 6x) -x3 – 6x2 Then combine like terms. -8x2 – 10x -x3 – 6x2 -x3 – 14x2 – 10x
