Aim: How do we multiply polynomials? Do Now: Multiply the following 1. 2x(3x + 1) 2. (x – 1)(x + 2) 3. (x +2)(x 2 – 3x + 1)

To multiply a binomial by a monomial, we just need to distribute 2 times 2x(3x + 1) To multiply a binomial by another binomial, we need to the FOIL method (x – 1)(x + 2) = 6x 2 + 2x = x 2 + 2x – x – 2 = x 2 + x – 2

To multiply a trinomial by a binomial, we just need to distribute 6 times (x + 2)(x 2 – 3x + 1) = x 3 – x 2 – 2x + 2

4. 5x(x 2 – 3x + 2) = 5(x 2 ) + 5x(-3x) + 5x(2) = 5x 3 – 15x 2 + 10x 5. (x 2 + x – 3)(2x 2 + 3x – 1) = x 2 (2x 2 ) + x 2 (3x) + x 2 (-1) + x(2x 2 ) + x(3x) +x(-1) – 3(2x 2 ) – 3(3x) – 3(-1) = 2x 4 + 3x 3 – x 2 + 2x 3 + 3x 2 – x – 6x 2 – 9x + 3 = 2x 4 + 5x 3 – 4x 2 – 10x + 3

Drill 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
