1. Possible offline software organisation in UK 1. ATLAS Software Review Concluded many things / annoyed many people......but....  Stated aim is to ‘globalise’ software, so that effort from around world can be tapped properly.  Idea of MOUs for some software tasks has emerged Therefore opportunities, to reconsider UK offline software contribution and particularly to develop OO sector. Background: 2. In ATLAS M.C. external members of committee commented: UK software effort does not seem to be very coherent ? Concerned that we dont have a ‘plan to reach a plan’ of computing/software model

2. some questions: 1. Is UK based coordination needed ? 2. Would we be better concentrating effort on some obvious sectors related to SCT ? 3. Do we want to prepare to ‘bid’ for some real virgin ‘deliverable’ with an associated MOU. 4. Is it just a question of PR -defend non- national based virtual groups -presenting what is done already in more coherent way - pseudo MOUs -play active part in development of computing/software model Individuals working in virtual groups Not UK based Choose to work more closely in UK on some few projects

3. Some software tasks I know of which have UK connections/potential: Geant-4 Simulation of SCT Taskleader: Jo Pater Contributors: Steve Snow, Chris Lester, Bill Murray, Tim Brodbeck+others at Lancs Observations: Fairly virgin ground Very important and highly relevant to UK interests Internationally co-ordinated by Jo at CERN Probably doesnt need UK meeting layer....but...people to speak to are a always useful Strongly suggest we always write a joint report on this to the UK MC !!! We could identify this as a ‘core’ UK area and encourage some others in UK to join

4. Alignment using tracks Taskleader/Organiser: Steve Haywood Contributors in UK ? SCT database Taskleader Jo Pater at present Contributors in UK ? Observations: I presume this covers production => physics I presume it needs a core of Objectivity experts + mechanical experts

5. OO Reconstruction and analysis framework (ARVE and evolutions) Coordinator : TBA Contributors: D.Candlin, R.Candlin, ?????sorry - who else in UK????? Comments: ATLAS Needs this ! Bona fide offline software contribution iin OO sector I suggest that any new physics interest could be pushed to do it in OO framework => push it forward by users => lead to contributions to this area

6. Software production process (ASP & evolution) Dont know what to say here except that UK people have been invloved in this, and sent unified letter to MC and ATLAS => this prior effort and feeling should be respected => this expertese should continue to be used.

7. Some personal observations to lead into discussion OO sector is certainly long term future and lots of work is needed => opportunity for new (and old) blood Management is acutely aware that it must change perception or fact that ist difficult to do anything quickly in this sector - so it WILL become easier. Now is a good time for us to at least review how best UK software effort might be applied to the ATLAS software needs. SCT simulation looks like a de-facto area we should back OO reconstruction framework looks interesting (naive view: links offline software with physics analysis)......... discussion...........
