5
Research and prepare a 4-minute talk about how animals communicate information with each other. This should be a general talk with lots of examples rather than an in-depth talk on one aspect. We will then hear each others talks.
6
IL Find out more about particular types of communication, for example threat displays to fend off predators or competing males, territorial scent marking, singing or other displays to attract mates. Produce a presentation or poster which we can look at next lesson.
7
Plenary Compile a list of the benefits and disadvantages of chemical communication, compared with visual or auditory communication.
8
Plenary Advantages could include: the fact that chemicals do not depend on lighting conditions (as visual signals do), they may be sensed over great distances and around corners, and they last longer (e.g. a scent trail can last for days). Disadvantages are: that they only spread downwind, the information content is often lower than with sound or visual, and chemicals in scent trails can be washed away by rain.
