1 Day Night and Seasons

2 Questions Define rotation, revolution, and orbit.
What causes day and night on earth? What two types of Earth motion determine the length of day and night? How does Earth’s tilt contribute to changing seasons? Draw a picture that demonstrates where the Earth is relative to the sun for each season. Explain why the Northern Hemisphere of Earth is warmest when farthest away from the sun.

3 Answers Define rotation, revolution, and orbit.
Rotation: an object spinning on its axis Revolution: an object moving around something Orbit: The path an object takes to move around something (the path of the revolution)

4 What causes day and night on earth?
The rotation of the earth around its axis causes day and night NOTE: The Earth’s axis is tilted 23.5 degrees!

5 What two types of Earth motion determine the length of day and night?
The rotation of the Earth in combination with the revolution/orbit around the sun

6 How does Earth’s tilt contribute to changing seasons on each hemisphere?
The tilt exposes more light towards one hemisphere compared to the other

7 Draw a picture that demonstrates where the Earth is relative to the sun for each season.

8 Explain why the Northern Hemisphere of Earth is warmest when farthest away from the sun.
The earth’s tilt determines the amount of light and thus the amount of heat that the earth receives. The proximity of the earth to the sun is not as affective as the tilt/light exposure.
