Inner PlanetsOuter Planets NOT a planet On the top third of a page in your notebook, make a simple drawing of our solar system. My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos.
3
How might life on Earth be different if we were closer to the sun? Farther?
5
What is the sun? Myth: the sun is a ball of burning fire. Myth: The sun is big. Reality: The sun is glowing, not burning like a fire. The heat is not produced by burning (a chemical reaction), but rather by fusion (a nuclear reaction). Myth: The sun is hot. Reality: Although it’s really big to a person, it’s a rather average sized star. Well, this one’s true. The sun is REALLY, REALLY hot. Its core is about 27 million degrees F. Your average campfire… less than a thousand degrees F.
6
Most of Earth’s energy comes from the sun. Life on Earth depends on this solar energy.
7
The Moon How far is it from Earth? What is its size compared to Earth? How often does it orbit Earth? In what ways does the moon affect Earth?
8
Rotation, Revolution, and Tilt Rotation: Earth rotates in a west-to-east direction, once every 24 hours. Revolution: Earth revolves in an elliptical orbit, once every 365 ¼ days. Tilt: Earth is tilted 23 ½ degrees on its axis. Using what you’ve learned today, answer the following question by drawing/coloring a picture on one page in your notes: How might Earth be different if it didn’t rotate, revolve, and tilt?
