3. The Chordates Members of the phylum Chordata are called chordates
All chordates share four characteristics:
a dorsal hollow nerve cord
a notochord
a pharyngeal pouches
a tail that extends beyond the anus

4. More Chordates are Vertebrates
More than 99% of all chrodates are placed in the subphylum Vertebrata
The backbone replaces the notochord in most developing vertebrates

6. Nonvertebrate Chordate
The two groups of nonvertebrate chordates are tunicates and lancelets.
Tunicates: the larval form has all of the
chordate characteristics.

8. Nonvertebrate Chordate
Lancelets: The small fishlike creatures called lancelets that live on the sandy ocean bottom.
- Have a closed circulatory
system
- Do not have a true heart
