DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – RURAL HONDURAS STATISTICS Average level of education is approximately 6 th grade There are usually no doctors within a 20 mile radius 80% of the population in rural areas has no access to a dentist 70% have no access to public sanitary services Typical families have less than 3 gallons of water per day to use Limited to no access to microfinance HONDURA S NICARAG UA COSTA RICA PANAM A GUATEMA LA BELIZ E EL SALVADOR

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – WHAT IS DENTAL BRIGADES? DENTAL BRIGADES Provides communities with urgent & preventative dental services through access to dentists and medicine every 3-4 months Through multiple 7-day brigades, community members receive dentist visits, extractions, cleanings, fluoride treatments, medicine, and dental care education workshops Community Health Workers are trained in communities to help provide follow-up to care and refer dental emergencies between brigades

WHAT DOES A BRIGADE LOOK LIKE?

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – ITINERARY ONE-WEEK DENTAL BRIGADE COMPONENTS Dental works in conjunction with Medical Brigades Volunteers work with licensed dentists Brigades visit communities over 3 consecutive days Volunteers & health professionals use Open MRS data software to track patient information and care Each daily clinic consists of the following stations: - Intake - Triage - Dental consultation - Prescription drop-off - Healthcare education workshops - Prescription pick-up and directions

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – DENTAL STATION Each dental clinic includes a cleaning station and surgical station. Volunteers have the opportunity to observe dentists during operations CHILDREN’S CHARLA Teeth brushing and flossing Fluoride treatments (by students) Dental education SURGICAL STATION Topical anesthetic Extractions (by dentists) Fillings (by dentists) Cold sterilization Post-op instructions

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS IN-TAKE STATION Volunteers record the following information from each patient using the Open MRS system: Name, Age, Gender Community Residence & Date of Visit

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS TRIAGE STATION Below are some of the items volunteers may record for each patient: Vitals & chief complaints Blood pressure & blood glucose Allergies, etc.

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS CONSULTATION STATION Doctors diagnose & prescribe medication to patients Students shadow and ask questions throughout consultation Every Consultation Station now has a gynecology station for pap smears

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS DENTAL STATION Dentists perform tooth extractions and fillings Students shadow and ask questions throughout operations and lead dental education workshops

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS EDUCATION STATION While Prescriptions are filled, patients receive public health education - Dental Care - Understanding Personal Health - Preventative Care

DENTAL BRIGADES INFO SESSION – CLINIC STATIONS PRESCRIPTION PICK-UP STATION Patients pick up prescriptions, volunteers provide the following instructions - Types of Medications - Dosage Amounts - Directions for Medication Usage
