Between 1790-1830, an interest in religion in the U.S. increased. This movement helped create Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches in the south. The region became known as the “Bible Belt.”

Tent revivals became very popular. A revival is a meeting meant to interest people in religion. These usually occurred at camp meetings and helped the Methodist Church grow.

Leaders wanted to unite the different groups. Primitive Baptists – believed that life happened according to a plan set in motion by God. Opposed missionary work and Sunday School. Free Will Baptists – Believed people had free will. They liked missionary work and education. The two groups joined together even though they had different views.

Improvements in Georgia’s educational system helped the growth of the state. Abraham Baldwin wrote out a plan for the first university in Georgia. He felt that the a good education should not be just for the wealthy and that the government had a duty to provide education to everyone. Up to this point, colleges were private and too expensive for the average person.

The first school open to lower-income people. The first public university in the U.S. Held its first classes in September 1801. Soon afterward, other states copied Georgia and began building public universities.

After the Revolutionary War, the state of Georgia expanded and people began moving to northern Georgia. State legislators wanted the capital to be moved further west. 1000 acres near the Ogeechee River was purchased for the new capital. It was to be called Louisville after King Louis XVI, a French king who helped the patriots during the revolution.
