the outcome

Breakout session: the challenges “What do you think the challenges are in delivering data curation services on your campus?” 1.Time, expertise, staff resources, training 2.Leadership and priority setting 3.Communication, advocacy, and marketing 4.Getting started

Challenge 1: time, expertise, staff resources, training 1.Not sure what to stop doing so that resources can be devoted to data curation space 2.Staffing issues: not adequate and lack of skills 3.Librarians need new skills. are afraid/intimidated by the subject 4.Librarians are not skilled in this area 5.Lack of funding 6.Staffing and resources in general. it’s a challenge. Need people who are educated and knowledgeable in data curation, IT 7.Time constraints 8.Lack of knowledge/skills for librarians

Challenge 2: leadership and priority setting 1.Need strong Leadership in libraries to develop data curation services 2.Leadership 3.Providing priorities 4.Lack of understanding and awareness about data curation importance 5.Why data curation is important and why librarians should be working on this 6.Developing partnerships outside the library 7.Unclear roles for campus/IT/library 8.Getting buy-in from admin and stakeholders for financial support 9.Organizational confusion: who takes the lead? 10.Poor understanding of value of data curation, both internally (library) and externally (campus)

Challenge 3: communication, advocacy, marketing 1.Communication and outreach 2.Lack of understanding and awareness about data curation importance 3.No effective marketing/outreach. Need better way to communicate existing services, but also articulate a broader vision of role for libraries 4.Communication issues: why data curation is important and why librarians should be working on this 5.Poor understanding of value of data curation, both internally (library) and externally (campus) 6.Lack of demand: convincing faculty they need data curation 7.How to connect with faculty and researchers 8.How to find audiences, partners 9.Relationships with researchers: getting into the pipeline; knowledge of projects - lack of what's going on campus; persuading researchers to use the tools; educating researchers - doing needs assessments

Challenge 4: getting started 1.Consider challenges 1-3 and staff are stuck 2.Is this a priority (again)? 3.Not sure how to start working in this space 4.My 2 cents
