Definition Mental Disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern that occurs in an individual and is thought to cause distress or disability that is not expected as part of normal development or culture. Guidelines for diagnosis are listed in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and other manuals.

Levels of Care in PA Least restrictive and community based are your first line of defense. In schools, Guidance Counselors are the first step. Services range can range from Outpatient to Inpatient settings Team approach provides better results Families should always be involved unless contraindicated by court.

Therapeutic Communication Non-Verbal Techniques ( Silence, Nods, Facial expression, Eye contact, etc). Encouraging and Eliciting techniques Minimal encouragements: “Uh-huh” “Go on” “I see” Door openers: “I’d like to hear more,” “Tell me about that,” Closed questions: “Do you like your teacher?” Open questions: ”How do you feel?” ”What happened next?”
