2 John Brown ‘s Raid on Harper’s Ferry John Brown hoped to start a massive slave rebellion by taking over a Federal Arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, VA. He had 20 men and would murder any Southerner that got in his way. He was Tried and Executed for his actions.

4 Northern & Southern Viewpoints The North viewed John Brown as a hero but did not approve of his extreme actions. The South feared John Brown. They were worried that similar attacks would follow and began to assemble Southern militia's which turned into the Confederate Army

5 Election of 1860 Northern Democrats choose Stephen A. Douglas for President Republicans choose Abraham Lincoln Lincoln promised not to abolish slavery where it currently existed South didn’t like or trust Lincoln Lincoln did not campaign in the South or win any Southern states.

9 South Secedes! Lincoln said he would not change slavery in the south, but he would not let it expand. People in the South believed that their economy and way of life would be destroyed. South Carolina – 1 st state to Secede SC believed it could because it had voluntarily joined the Union

10 South Secedes Continued States that left the Union: MS, FL AL, GA, LA, TX, NC, SC, TN, VA, AR Jefferson Davis Becomes President of the Confederate Sates of America. John Crittenden proposed Constitutional Amendment to protect slavery Lincoln Rejects Plan! – NO Compromise about extending slavery.

14 Lincoln as President Inaugurated on March 4, 1861 Rejected the idea that Southern States could leave Union. In inaugural address said that he would keep all gov. property in seceding states Hoped they would return to the Union. Ultimate Goal – to restore the Union! – NOT abolish Slavery!
