SETTING THE SCENE Population: 11 th c – 1 million (whole of British history to get to 1 million) 1300 – 5 MILLION 1400 – 2.5 MILLION Not back to 5 million until 1600s! Life Expectancy: Today – 89 male; 92 female 1350 50 years if wealthy; 42 years if poor 35% -40% of people under 15 yrs old Only 5% of people over 65% Childbirth: 22% of women died in childbirth! 10% babies are stillborn. 25% dead by 1 st birthday. Height: Average Male: 5’ 7” Average Female: 5’ 2”

Towns London in 1100 – approx 15,000 (Teignmouth) London in 1300 – approx 80,000 (Taunton) London in 1377 – approx 40,000 London in 1650 – approx 420,000 Exeter in 1377 – approx 2600 was classed as a city! Pop. of Kingsteignton is 8000 today. 12% of population lived in towns in 14 th c. 89% in UK today. Travelling -Very few roads (40% are of Roman origin) -No maps -Travel at about 15 miles per day -Travel is dangerous -Never more than 8 miles from a market town

200 people (out of 5 million) formed the ruling elite (King/Queen, Dukes, Earls, Barons & top clergy. These 200 owned 75% of land. Below nobility were knights (approx 1000 in the country) Largest class of population (40%) were Villeins (peasants) who farmed, but did not own the land, their master’s land.

Year 12 Summer Assignment Produce an A3 mind-map sheet on the following areas: law & order; growth of monasteries; social hierarchy; the countryside; urbanisation & population. Concentrate on change before and after Black Death (1348). Research using internet and record your sources. You will present to class when you get back in September.
