Intermediate 1/ 2 PE Skills & Techniques Lesson 9

Plan for the next couple of weeks Today (Tues. 16 th March) -Final gymnastics practice before assessment. -Final revision period before skills & techniques end of unit assessment. Thursday (Thurs. 18 th March) -Final trampolining practice before assessment Tuesday (Thurs. 23 rd March) -You will all be assessed on your gymnastics apparatus sequence. -Skills & techniques end of unit assessment Thursday (Thurs. 18 th March) -You will be assessed on your trampolining sequence

Aim of Today’s lesson Revise certain aspects of skills & techniques. Continue to practice exam like question in preparation for our end of unit test. Ask questions about any area of skills & techniques that you are finding difficult.

Methods of Practice Gradual Build-up Whole-Part-Whole Repetition Practice

Whole-Part-Whole Used by performers who already have some experience of the skill. The WHOLE skill is practiced first. A weakness in the performance is identified using a Model Performer observation schedule. The learner then practices the PART of the skill that wasn’t performed correctly. After improving the weak part of the skill the learner performs the WHOLE skill again. When performing the whole skill again the learner pays special attention to the part just practiced.

Repetition Practice Used by performers that only make small mistakes whilst performing a skill. The skill is practiced over and over again. After every performance the performer receives feedback from a coach or team mate. The performer concentrates in improving the part of the skill the feedback relates to on their next attempt. After a certain number of practices the performer will have a break or move onto a new skill. Why do you think this is?

Qu. 1.Select two methods of practice from the list below and describe how they were used to develop your weakness. Gradual Build-up Whole-Part-Whole Repetition Practice Method of Practice 1………..(2) Method of Practice 2………..(2)

Gradual Build Up Gradual build up broke the skill down into smaller, simpler stages. The stages I went through were donkey kick, walk feet up the wall, handstand against the wall, handstand with support, handstand forward roll. I didn’t move on until I had performed the each stage successfully 3 times.

Repetition Practice When I became proficient (good) at the skill I repeated it over and over. This allowed me to ‘groove’ the skill and make it automatic. After each attempt my partner gave me a small piece of feedback to concentrate on for next time.

Whole-Part-Whole I performed the full skill but realised there was a weakness within it. I then isolated (took the weakness out) the weak part of my skill & practiced it on its own. When I felt I had improved the weakness I put the skill back together. I then practiced the full skill again.

Question 2 How did you use motivation or concentration or feedback when developing this skill? (2)

Model Answer - Feedback I used feedback from my model performer observation schedule to create practices that would develop my weakness. During my practice I received verbal feedback from my teacher. I focused on developing this area during my next attempt. Praise built my confidence as I practiced.

Question 3 What goals/targets did you set yourself when developing this skill/technique? (2)

Model Answer By breaking the skill down into smaller stages I had set myself small, achievable goals. My specific goals were…to lock my arms during the handstand and to reach forwards out of the forwards roll to stand up without using my hands.

Question 4 How did developing this skill/technique improve your overall performance? (2)

Model Answer The handstand forward roll is a complex skill. My routine now contains more complex skills with high tariffs that are performed with control and fluency allowing me to gain a higher mark. Being able to perform the skill automatically allows me to perform it to a high level without thinking about it. This allows me to focus on forthcoming skills to ensure they are executed with control and fluency.

Now Are there any questions on skills & techniques & gymnastics?

For next weeks test you should; Study the information in your gymnastics bible & use the steps to success to see how you are progressing. Use the notes in your class jotter & the online powerpoints for extra information.

Finally……… If you are struggling with any part of the course come & see me before Tuesday.

Homework For Thursday 18 th March These questions will aid your revision! Choose 1 method of practice and describe how you used it to develop your weakness.(2) How did you use feedback to develop your weakness? (2) What goals/ targets did you set yourself whilst developing your weakness? (2)
