2 4321 I thoroughly understand and can identify all of the following:  Velocity  Acceleration  Mass  Force  Newton’s Laws of Motion  Position-Time Graphs  Velocity-Time Graphs I could also explain any of these topics to someone else with confidence. I understand and can identify all of the following:  Velocity  Acceleration  Mass  Force  Newton’s Laws of Motion  Position-Time Graphs  Velocity-Time Graphs I understand and can identify at least 3 of the following:  Velocity  Acceleration  Mass  Force  Newton’s Laws of Motion  Position-Time Graphs  Velocity-Time Graphs I still have questions about at least 2 of these before I can understand this with confidence. With help, I understand and can identify at least 1 or 2 of the following:  Velocity  Acceleration  Mass  Force  Newton’s Laws of Motion  Position-Time Graphs  Velocity-Time Graphs I have very little understanding of at least 1 of these topics, and have many questions before I can understand this with confidence. Learning Goal: You will be able to understand the relationship between force and motion by describing concepts such as velocity, acceleration, mass, force, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and be able to create and interpret position-time and velocity-time graphs. Physics Learning Goal #1

3 Newton’s First Law Newton's first law is called the law of inertia. Basically it states that objects resist changing their state of motionNewton's first law Inertia- to remain unchanged An object in motion will continue at constant speed and in a straight line until acted upon by force.

4 Newton's First Law, The Law of Inertia An object at rest will stay at rest unless an unbalanced force acts on it. An object in motion will move at constant velocity unless an unbalanced force acts on it. Things tend to keep on doing what they're already doing. Left to themselves, objects don't speed up, don't slow down, and don't change direction. It requires an unbalanced force to change the velocity of an object.

5 Newton's First Law, The Law of Inertia If an object has a constant velocity, then no unbalanced forces are pushing on it. Whatever an object is doing, that's what it wants to do.
