The Sass Castle Reuse reduce and recycle every day for green living!

It’s in the basic things

Design Elements Included  Recycled interior material (such as tire house, bottle bed, using crates as bedside tables etc.) vs conventional  CFL lighting vs Incandescendant  Composting vs synthetic fertilizer  Green Living roof vs regular roof  Earth tubes vs air conditioner/heater  Cork flooring vs conventional  Dual flush toilet vs low flow

Biomass Fuel  Plant/animal waste contains stored energy that is extracted while burning, boiling, or converting to liquid fuel Energy Pellets Liquid Fuels Power Combustion Gas fication

Advantages  Renewable resource  Takes away dependence on fossil fuels  Converts waste into fuel  Less harmful commissions than coal  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Euz9 DSYTxUo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Euz9 DSYTxUo (about one min)

Disadvantages  Requires large areas of land to be effective  Some materials aren’t available year round  Geography limits types of biomass  Can lead to available biomasses to become a limited resource

CFL Lighting  More energy efficient then incandescent bulbs b/c little heat  CFLs have an electric current that energizes argon and mercury vapor o Which excites a glowing phosphor coating inside the bulb  Gives off bright white light vs. soft yellow glow of incandescent  Generally lasts 10x longer  Uses 75% less energy  Though it does initially cost more

Compost  Enriches the soil  Good mulch for shrubs and trees  Less pollution to the air –incinerators  Keeps food waste out of landfill where it won’t decompose  Good for worms and other helpers  Can cost around $135

Green Living Roof  Storm water management  Improves air quality  Thermally insulate the house  Reduces noise level  Increases the biodiversity  New space for agriculture/recreational activity

Go with the green scene!

Tire House  Will remove 2,000 tires -300mil/year in U.S.  Unused tires a perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes  When tires are burned gives off toxic smoke  Take up a lot of space in landfills  Trap gases (ex: methane) that later come up and destroy landfill’s linears  Buildings have less than “Carbon Zero” footprint (removes junk)  Great insulation- lower heating bill

Recycled interiors

Earth Tubes  Partially dehumidifies the air  Heats and cools buildings by pushing air through tubes 3-6ft in the ground, then into the house  Saves $50,000/year

Sustainable Flooring  Resilient  Durable  Warm underfoot  Easier to install than wood flooring  Absorbs sound  Comes from the bark of cork tree it is a renewable resource  Will show indentations  Color fades

Dual Flush Toilet  Gives you two options for flushing one that uses more water  Conserves water  Can save up to 68% more water than conventional low flow toilet  Pays for itself in 2-3 years
