Lighting “The art of cinematography is the art of lighting and making that light tell the story.” -Stephen H. Burum, ASC (Apocalypse Now, Carlito's Way, Mission Impossible,etc.).

Photo = Light Graph = Record Digital CCD Chip (Charged Coupled Device) Recording With Light FILMVIDEO VidEre = to see

How Light Effects Audience Where you look?

How Light Effects Audience How you feel Lighting effects our mood and how we perceive a particular scene

How Lighting Effects Us

Differentiates Time or Place Inside the Matrix Zion “the real world”

Hard and Soft Light Hard LightSoft Light vs.

Hard Light

Soft Light

Color Temperature Measured using Kelvin scale.

Mixing Color Temperatures Does anyone see the problem with this photo?

Lighting Source and Angle Goal is to create 3 dimensional look The camera has a limited contrast range Overhead and back light sources don’t work by themselves Front light can lack depth Side light is a good choice if you only have one source of light

Lighting Source and Angle Traditional 3 point lighting High main light (key) side light (fill) Back light (hair)

Key Light Your Key Light represents the dominant light source, such as the sun, a window etc. The Key Light is the subject’s main illumination. It defines the most visible light and shadows. Offset 15–45 degrees above and from the side of the camera.

Fill Light(s) Next add your Fill Light(s). The Fill Light softens and extends the key and makes more of the subject visible. A common Key : Fill ratio is 3:1

Back Light or “Rim” Light The Back Light creates a "defining edge" Helps visually separate the subject from the background.

3 Point Lighting  3-Point Lighting is a versatile and popular starting-point for lighting.  Be creative and have fun!

Use What You Have The SUN!! Most powerful and common source of light. Beware of heavy shadows when the sun is high in the sky (noon). Best times for filming outdoors is early morning or late afternoon.

Improvising with Light Bouncing light Reflect, diffuse and redirect light Creates softer, more even lighting Examples: Bounce Card (white poster board), wall/ceiling, shiny surface

Adding Color to Light Gels – colored, transparent sheet placed in front of light source as a filter to color illumination Correct poor lighting condition Cast a hue over scene for a dramatic effect

Other Lighting? Background lighting Adds further depth between actors and background. Draw attention to something in the background – where is the impact of scene?

Basic Types of Lights Focusing Quartz Broad Softlight

Focusing Quartz Focus ranges from “spot” to “flood” Put out a HARD/DIRECT light and often needs to be diffused or bounced. Outfitted with BARN DOORS

Broads Not able of focus Supply a flat even pattern of light The HARD/DIRECT pattern must also be diffused or bounced.

Soft light A Soft light is a permanent portable bounce light. It’s light bounces off a curved inner surface and out toward the subject.

Tips for FVP 12 Look for well lit areas in the school. Look for creative ways to use natural light from the windows. Be aware of the camera exposure settings to best control the available lighting. Don’t try and use extra lighting for every shot but try it at some point in the video. Try not to MIX many different light sources. Have your actor wear clothes that contrast the main settings that your video takes place. Guidelines are NOT rules…but they are “time tested” and worth a look. Be creative and have fun.
