DEFINITION Domination by one country of the political, economic and cultural life of another country or region. CAUSES Political, Economic and Social

Imperialism Political Most of the leaders of the countries of Europe had a deep sense of competition between and among each other. Many were in need of natural resources (coal and timber) especially for industrialization.

Imperialism Economic The Industrial Revolution was the motivation for many European countries to find locations to market their products.

Imperialism Social Western Civilization had a sense of racial superiority. Europeans believed they were superior to all others. Imperial conquest and destruction of weaker races was natures way of improving the human species.

Imperialism Suez Canal 1869—The Suez Canal opened. It linked the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. Turkish ruler of Egypt owned the largest number of shares in the company that built it. 1875—Britain gains control of the canal by buying shares in the company. 1882—Britain rules over Egypt

Imperialism By the 1830s, opium shipped from India to Canton to be traded fro Chinese goods By 1836, the Chinese Imperial government makes opium illegal. By 1839, the Chinese officials tried to stop the opium trade by destroying 20, 000 chests of opium.

Imperialism Treaty of Nanjing 1842 --All British citizens subjected to British not Chinese law --British would no longer have to pay tribute to the imperial administration in order to trade with China. --Five new ports open in China --No restrictions on British trade, which means opium trade more than doubled in the three decades that followed.

Boxer Rebellion—1900 Righteous and Harmonious Fists They were referred to as Boxers by Westerners. A radical group of Nationalists that drove out all foreigners. Is this a good or bad thing? The Boxers attacked Western embassies which lasted for two months. It was put down by an international force.
