DOING EVERYTHING AS DEVOTIONAL SERVICE SO AS NOT TO FORGET THE GOAL OF ENGAGING EVERYONE IN CHANTING HARE KRSNA AND CONNECTING THEM TO LORD KRSNA The following slides will be describing duties, obligations and relationships between various members in varnashram. We have to remember that if these people are devotees then be very careful NOT to commit any offenses. In any case, one should NOT be offensive towards anyone. In Varnashram there will be people from all background who are eligible to become devotees. So we have to have that understanding in our mind. 8

Relationships & Duties Explained - Similar to Brahma Vaivarta Purana - From View Of Adult Women Woman With Her Father Must disrupt her ties with him at marriage. Become detached. Not interfere in her parents' home. Not give gifts to her father's family. If she gives, then the father must give twice amount of value back. Affectionate, childlike she can miss him, but very little intimate communication. Don't travel or confide with him alone. Don't worry him with her problems. Make him feel that she's happy. Thankful and obliged to him for his upbringing. Daughter thinks and acts in such a way to bring fame to her father's family's reputation. If she is well-trained and faithful, it makes it easier for her father to marry his other children. Father With His Married Daughter Always gives gifts to her on special occasions (festivals, anniversaries, Diwali, etc.) Not interfere in her married life. Concentrate on training his sons and family successfully so daughter can be relieved and peaceful in her own home. Always very obliged and respectful to her husband's relatives for accepting his daughter into their family. Takes humble (inferior) position to them. Encourages her at all costs to get along with her husband and his family. Woman With Father-In-Law Quiet, shy, complete respect. Gives him all honour. Talks only when required. Communicates through husband. Covered chastity, never pass in front of him, cover face. Thankful for the son. Obliged to serve him because he is other half of son. If he is wrong, never counter. Encourage husband to respect his father. Service in his old age. Medical care. Father-In-Law With Daughter-In-Law Father-in-law helps daughter-in bring up her children. Thankful for her service. Stops his son from chastising her. Coaches the son to take nice care of her. Minimum communication and talking. Act to receive respect (awe and reverence) exemplary model. Studies scriptures, practises devotion. Detached from material life. Overlooks her faults. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare Woman (As Granddaughter) With Paternal Grandfather Affectionate to him. Fights to sit on his lap. Competitive with the brothers for attention and giving service. Cooks specially for him (more so than for her father who is more at work). Obliged to him. Thinks of his medical welfare and his diet. Reads scripture to him, thus helping her learn also. Grandfather (Father's Father) With Woman (As Granddaughter) He spoils her up to ten years. Takes her out and gives her gifts. Encourages her cooking skills. Lives in the childhood home. Engages her in service to the other women. Tells stories while she's young. Encourages her into womanly behaviour. Sees her as a responsibility of the family for her eventual marriage. Woman (As Granddaughter) With Maternal Grandfather (Mother's Father) Nothing special. Treats like a respectable elder. Maternal Grandfather With Woman (As Granddaughter) Buys gifts for her and her children. Giving. Could give money for her education. If parents can't properly take care, he could accept foster raising on consent of other grandparents. Invites her for semi-annual vacations at his home. He can help out with her marriage arrangement and finances. Woman With Son Affectionate. Lightly (teasingly) disciplines while young. Spoils. Cooks special things. After 10 looks up to him. Teaches him respect and service to father and all elders. She gives blessings on his head, prays and performs rites for his protection. Tells him heroic stories from sastra. Teaches saintly qualities. When older, she feels dependent and helpless to son for everything, especially as her husband renounces. 11

5 Places of Sin in a Grihastha’s Home Grahastha So many living entities are daily killed in these places and many other ways, simply for survival, therefore the five kinds of sacrifices are required to counteract these sins. 19
20
5 groups to be taken care of by a Grihasthas to counteract the sins & fulfill obligations DEVA – YAJNA - SANKIRTAN - Sacrifices RSI - READING SCRIPTURES - BHAGAVATAM (Distributing Books) NARNAM – FEEDING THE GUESTS – FEEDING GUESTS (Distributing Prasad) PITRI – OFFERING SRADDHA (FEEDING BRAHMANS) – FEEDING BRAHMANS BHUTAS – SERVING & TAKING CARE OF ALL LIVING ENTITIES ( FEEDING & PROTECTING THEM ) (ENVIRONMENT CONCIOUS) – SAME B.G.1.41 purport As soon as a person is born he is indebted to Devas, Rsi, Forefathers, All Human Beings, All Living Entities for all the necessities of life. Therefore he has to perform all these yajnas or he is incurring sins. Moreover simply by his existance he is sinning everyday every moment therefore he has to perform Yajnas to counteract the Sins. Śrīmad- Bhāgavatam (11.20.9): Śrīmad Bhāgavatam11.20.9 tāvattāvat karmāṇi kurvītakarmāṇikurvīta nana nirvidyeta yāvatānirvidyetayāvatā matmat-kathā-śravaṇādau vākathāvā śraddhāśraddhā yāvan na jāyateyāvannajāyate "As long as one is not satiated by fruitive activity and has not awakened his taste for devotional service by hearing and chanting about the Supreme Lord, one has to act according to the regulative principles of the Vedic injunctions." The conclusion is that one who has fully surrendered to the devotional service of the Supreme Lord is a first-class human being. However, if one foolishly neglects the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord and instead accepts the temporary material body to be everything, then one must certainly perform elaborate sacrifices. 20
