Introduction to Data Collection

First Page of your Composition Journal Title IV: DV: Null Hypothesis: Alternative Hypotheses: ◦ AH1 ◦ AH2 ◦ AH3 (optional depending on how you did it)

Second Page of your Composition Journal Write down the general procedures for the two experiments. I would recommend using pencil so that it will be easy to update the information.

General Procedures: Experiment One 1. Cut out a paper towel circle that will fit in the bottom of the petri dish. 2. Place the colored dot that matches the dot found at your station in the center. 3. Divide the paper towel into equal quadrants and label each section (1, 2, 3, and 4). 4. Place the paper towel in the bottom of your petri dish.

General Procedures: Experiment One 5. Place one basil seed into the center of each quadrant using the forceps found at your station. 6. Lightly mist the paper towel (one spray should do). 7. Place the lid on the petri dish and label (with the tape) your group name on the outside. 8. Come in once a day to measure the root growth & re-spritz the paper towel. 9. Place the petri dish in the drawer labeled test tubes.

General Procedures: Experiment Two on page three. 1. Label one Dixie cup per group with group name and colored dot. 2. Fill cup 3/4 th of the way with soil. 3. Make a small hole in the center of the soil approximately 1/2 inch deep. 4. Place one seed into the hole using the forceps and gently cover with soil. 5. Lightly mist (3-4 sprays) the soil and place your cup on the plant tray in the back of the room that is labeled with your block. 6. Come in once a day to monitor your basil seed. Water your potential plant and note the day the seed broke the soil.

Fourth Page of your Composition Journal Example Date Table: Day Root Growth (mm) 1 2 3 4 0 1 2 3 4Weekend 5 6 7 8 9 10 This is just a sample data table. Please make yours to represent the data you & your group collected!
