What does it take to survive? Could you do it? Work with a partner to make a list. What would you take on a survivor trip? Share 2 things from your board with the class. If I said you could take another living thing, would that change your answer(s)?

What do other living organisms need to survive?

Survival Needs Different adaptations help organisms survive. What did you need (not want) to survive? What does an organism need to survive and to pass on its genes? 1.Energy (food) 2.Shelter 3.Space 4.Soil 5.Climate/weather 6.Mates How an organism adapts to its abiotic factors determines it’s survival. How it interacts with other living organisms is also a factor.

We are surrounded by living and non-living things. All animals and plants are living things and biology is the study of these living things. A cat playing with a toy is obviously living. A pigeon flying from tree to tree is also a living thing. Sometimes it is not so easy to decide. Plants are living things but they do not play with toys or fly.

The Characteristics of Life All living things…. …no matter how different from each other they may be…. ….share a set of common characteristics.

So if biotic means the living things in the environment. Therefore, all living things have the characteristics of life. What are the non-living things called? Nope not dead!

These are NON LIVING things in the environment that help organisms meet their needs for survival. Examples are: Temperature, sunlight, water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, soil, nutrients, space Let’s look at them more closely

Sunlight – is there a lot or a little in this environment? Temperature – is it hot or cold? How might this affect the organisms that live here?

How does soil play a part in an ecosystem?

Biotic and abiotic factors combine to create a system or more precisely, an ecosystem. An ecosystem is a community of living and nonliving things considered as a unit. Both factors interact and influence each other within this ecosystem. Characteristics of organisms cause them to interact with the living and nonliving parts of their ecosystems.

These interactions are important for survival Ex. Chloroplasts in a plant cell allows them to interact with sunlight. Draw the Venn diagram in your notes – base it on the picture below. What do we title the center?

To sum up… All of the biotic parts of an ecosystem are all of the living things in the ecosystem. These include plants, animals, decomposers, etc. that live in the area and interact. The abiotic parts of an ecosystem are the nonliving parts of the ecosystem that help organisms meet their needs for survival. They may include temperature, amount of sunlight, water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, soil, nutrients, space, etc.
