I. The Portuguese Empire
Afonso de Albuquerque Portuguese Sailor Conquered and established the Portuguese colonial empire in the Indian ocean Wanted to end Muslim rule in Southeast Asia Malacca Taken in 1511 Massacred the city’s Muslims Turned into the Spice Trading Center Controlled by Portugal for most of the 1500’s Portugal lacked resources to really expand on their empire

II. The Rise of the Dutch 1599 The Dutch return home with spices This led to mass numbers of oversea activities for the Dutch 1602 Dutch East India Co. Created to rival the Portuguese They had full sovereign powers Build armies Wage war Negotiate treaties Govern territory 1641 The Dutch capture Malacca Establish a Monopoly on the Spice Islands
