SECTIONS 1.7 AND 1.8 Physics and Science
2
Searching for Order People put the world in order many different ways: Some through science, Some through art, And some through religion Although these areas are different – they still overlap. 2
3
Searching for Order Science has the focus of discovering and recording natural phenomena. Art focuses on the value of human interaction, as it pertains to the senses. Religion focuses on the source, purpose and meaning of everything. 3
4
Searching for Order The principle values of art and science are similar: Art describes the human experience, and human emotions. Art further suggests what may lay ahead for humans. Science tells us the possibilities of nature, and predict nature even before the possibilities are experienced. Science allows us to connect things, see relationships and make sense of nature. Science broadens our perspective. A truly educated person is knowledgeable in both the sciences and the arts. 4
5
Searching for Order Religion differs from science in that it looks for nature’s purpose, rather than nature’s order. Religion involves faith. Religion involves the worship of a supreme being. Religion involves the creation of human society. Although science and religion are different, the are generally not contradictory, but complementary. If you understand both science and religion, you can embrace both without contradiction. 5

Man’s Vision Over time, man’s vision has manifested itself in many ways. 3000 years ago – the construction of the great pyramids. A few centuries ago – the construction of cathedrals, synagogues, temples and mosques. Many of these structures took over a century to build, so no one who started the structure was present at its completion. People viewed these structures as, “Spaceships of Faith” anchored to the ground, but pointing to space. 6
7
Man’s Vision Today, the focus of the best engineers and scientists is the construction of vehicles to take us into space. Many of these people were alive before jets were in commercial use. What do you think the changs will be in your lifetime? 7
8
Man’s Vision 8 Remember, Earth is our cradle, Does space exploration take us out of our cradle? Are there a whole new range of possibilities in space? We continue to aim for the cosmos.
