Chemical Bonding Activity 8: Day 2
2
Curriculum ► Big Idea: Chemical bonding occurs as a result of attractive forces between particles. ► Concept #1: The type of bonding that occurs between atoms is related to the valence electrons of those atoms. ► Concept #2: Chemical bonding can be covalent, polar covalent, or ionic. ► Concept #3: lewis dot diagrams are useful for studying the structure and bonding nature of atoms. PA Standard: 3.2.C.A2 “Explain how atoms combine to form compounds through both ionic and covalent bonding.”
3
Today’s Agenda: Ionic Bonding ► Opener: What is the charge on a Fluorine ion? What is the charge on a Calcium ion? ► Go over homework ► Chemistry Vocabulary ► Paper Ion Lab (see handout) ► Closure: What is the formula for Calcium Bromide?

Today’s Chemistry Vocabulary ► Halogens: group VII on the periodic table consisting of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine. ► Binary compound: a compound, formed from the combining of two different elements. ► Ionic bond: the attraction between oppositely charged ions. ► Covalent bond: when two atoms combine and share their paired electrons with each other.
