Farm Safety 2
2
Complete the sums 1.The answer is 12,000 kilograms, this is more than a full grown African elephant! 2. The grain store is 8 metres tall, about four and a half times as tall as the average man. Never play in grain stores as it could be easy to drown in this depth of grain. 3. The bale of hay has a volume of 300,000 cubic centimetres or 300 cubic metres.
3
Complete the sums 4.The farmer could stack 20 hales of bay in the barn. 5.Each stack of bales would weigh 10,000 kilograms, around as much as ten cars! Of course this could be very dangerous if it fell over so you should never play on stacks of hay bales.

Safety around water Do you think any of these 4 depths of water are not dangerous? OceanPuddle Pond Swimming pool 15 cm25 m2m85 cm
7
Safety around water Actually all of them can be dangerous, even the puddle and the pond. It is possible to drown in even a tiny amount of water so it is important to always be very careful around any water.
8
Safety around water When you are on a farm this could be ponds, lakes, streams, rivers or even drinking troughs; always be careful not to go too close!
9
Safety around water You can also find grain stores and slurry lagoons (places where animal manure mixed with water is stored) on farms. Children have drowned in slurry lagoons before so you should stay away from these areas, following instructions on any signs you might see. Photo credit: Colin Worby

Safety around water If someone you are with does get into trouble with water then you should do the following: 1.Get help – Alert an adult or call 999 or 112 for the emergency services. 2.Reach – See if you can reach the person in the water. 3.Wade – Wade in to see if you can help them out. 4.Throw – Throw a floatation aid out to the person. 5.Row – If possible row a boat out to the person to try to help.
11
Safety around water If you phone the emergency services you will need to explain which service you need (fire brigade, police or ambulance) and where you are. If you do not know exactly where you are try to think of a nearby landmark, road or junction.
12
Complete the statement 1.It is dangerous to play on ice because it could break and lead to you falling in the water.
13
Complete the statement 2. If someone you are with is injured on a farm or in the countryside then alert an adult as quickly as possible.
14
Complete the statement 3. The number to call the emergency services on is 999. You can also call 112, a number which will work anywhere in Europe.
15
Complete the statement 4. Never play in grain stores or near slurry lagoons as there could be a danger of drowning. Look out for signs to help avoid them.
16
Complete the statement 5. Farms can be dangerous places and if you are not sure something is safe ask an adult first. The adult you ask should be someone who knows the workings of the farm and is responsible for your safety whilst you are visiting.
