Math Menu: Intro toNspire CAS Software In-service CEC, Room 301 Tuesday, March 2 nd

Prayer to our Lady of Good Counsel God of wisdom and love, you have sent your Son Jesus to be the light of the world, and continue to send your Holy Spirit among us to guide us into the way of truth. Open our hearts to your word and let us ponder your actions among us. Give us your Spirit of wisdom and knowledge, of understanding and counsel. With Mary, may we rejoice in your gifts, and walk in the way of truth and love. With all your people on earth and in eternity, we ask this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of your loving Spirit, one holy God, for ever and ever. Amen!

Agenda  Welcome  Cheers, Fears and Unclears  Math and Science Activities Online and the Nspire Computer Link software  Data Collection using the CBR2  Lunch  Nspire CAS Teacher Edition Software and Activities Exchange  Connect to Class  Working on your Activity  Next Steps & Dismissal

Cheers and Fears and Unclears  In a group of 3 or 4 discuss: What has gone well so far? What have you struggled with? What are your fears? What are you still uncertain about?  Share with the whole group

Math and Science Nspire Activities  TI offers many online supports for teachers and students  There are many prepared Nspire activities for Math and Science  Let’s download and try them out …..  www.tinspire.com www.tinspire.com

Nspire Computer Link Software  This program allows you to: Transfer files to and from the handheld Transfer the OS to a handheld Take screen shots Backup or restore handhelds  Let’s see how it works…  Explore one of the 12 science and math activities with a partner  Do a demo for the whole group

Data Collection using the CBR2  The latest version of the OS (1.7) has “plug and play” usage for the CBR2  Each school got one CBR2 over the last 2 years  Let’s see how to use the CBR 2….  MatchMyGraph activity  Collecting Data activity Collect and model linear, quadratic and periodic data

Vernier Data Probes for Nspire CAS  Vernier offers four products for data collection EZ-Temp Probe (connects to Handheld and collects real time temperatures), P/N EZ-TMP, $59 Go-Link (connect probes to PC), P/N GO-LINK, $85 Easy Link (connect CBL2 probes to Nspire), P/N EX- LINK, $89 Mini USB Adapter (Connect EZ-Temp or CBR2 to PC), P/N MINI-USB, $7.50  James Frielink (james@merlan.ca 1-800-387-2474 x113) from Merlan Scientific is the rep for Ontariojames@merlan.ca  Let’s try using these probes….

LUNCH Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts, which we are about to receive from your bounty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Nspire CAS Teacher Edition Software  Each school has one license of this software  This software can be used to demo any activity using the Emulator  You will also use it create your activity  Lets have a brief tour….

Make your First Activity  Create an activity to allow students to investigate the roots of a quadratic function (Grade 10 Academic)  Specifications: 1.1: A title (notes) page including your name 1.2: A notes page with the expectation (QR3.04) 1.3: A notes page with instructions 1.4: A graphs and geometry page to graph the function and find the roots using trace 1.5: A notes page with instructions 1.6: A spreadsheet page to make a table of values for the function 2.1: A notes page for instructions 2.2 A calculator page to use CAS to expand the factored form to compare to the function 2.3: A notes page with a journal prompt and instructions to repeat the steps for other quadratic functions  Save the activity and transfer it to a handheld to test it

Making Handout Sheets  Once your activity is perfected you need to make supporting student handouts…  Good handouts have: Clear instructions Screen shots Questions to expose and provoke student thinking  Tips: 1. Use tables with no visible borders to make formatting easier. 2. Nspire Key Fonts allow you to put pictures of the handheld keys in the handout  Let’s see how to make a student handout…

Check out Some Premade Activities  The Activities Exchange contains almost 1000 premade activities for Nspire or Nspire CAS  You can search for a topic of your choice  Let’s see how to do it…  With a partner, download and try an activity  Do a demo for the whole group

Online Resources  DPCDSB Nspire Wiki http://dpcdsb-nspire.wikispaces.com/  Nspire web site: http://www.ti-nspire.com  Algebra Nspired web site: http://www.ti-mathnspired.com/login/?next=/ Must create a login and password  Activities Exchange: http://education.ti.com click on Activities Exchange in the Classroom Activities drop down list http://education.ti.com  Nspire Video Tutorials http://www.tinspire.com

Connect To Class  Each school gets a copy of Connect to Class software on a board owned laptop  The kit contains two 4 port USB hubs that allow you to distribute files and OS to up to 8 handhelds at a time.  Let’s see how it works ….  Come get your school’s copy of the kit.

Your Responsibilities  With a partner you are to create an activity using Nspire CAS to address a cluster of expectations  You will use your class for action research to design, test and refine your activity  Keep a journal of your classroom experiences with Nspire CAS  You and your partner will present your completed activity at the in-service on April 7 th

Activity Planning Time  Get together with your partner and plan your activity  Refer to the sheets of problem areas in grade 9 and 10 we made in February  Make use of the Activity Planning Template

Next Steps  Work on your activity and try it out in class  What other support do you need to complete your activity for April 7th?  Hardware or Software Issues?  Any other questions or concerns?
