2 Internal Citations (Parenthetical citations) MLA Style F Use after EVERY fact, statistic, example, quote or paraphrase from a source –EXCEPT common knowledge F In parenthesis, include the following information from the original source: –Author’s last name (or Title if no author is listed) –Page number (ONLY the number) –For example: (Taylor 25)(Taylor 25) (“Memory Studies on Rats”)(“Memory Studies on Rats”)

3 Direct Quotations F Use sparingly! F Be accurate - Quotes must be identical to the original. F Use “” for ANYTHING copied from the source, even a phrase! F Include attribution –According to Dr. Dewey… F Follow with Internal Citation – –Dr. Indiana Jones, animal psychologist, believes that “animals should have the same rights to life as human beings” (Taylor 25).

4 Direct Quotations - an example F F Article 13 of the “The Universal Declaration of the Rights of Animals” states that “scenes of violence involving animals shall be banned from cinema and television, except for humane education” (“Uncaged”). Animal rights groups have been working with the United Nations to have this belief recognized internationally. If they are successful, perhaps animal cruelty in films, such as the torture and killing of six bulls in Pedro Almodovar’s “Hable con Ella,” will be eliminated.

5 Paraphrasing F Put information in your OWN words. F Do NOT mimic sentence or paragraph structure. F Do NOT just use synonyms and/or rearrange the words. F Follow with a citation. –According to a recent article in Newsweek, hate crimes have increased 25% in the past decade (Smith 23).

6 Works Cited F Lists ALL sources referred to in your paper. F Alphabetical order by last name of author. If no author, by the first major word in the title. F Double-space. F Use hanging indent style.
