EPICS Design Process

Design Process and Project Mgt Many models and tools Design Process oMechanical Engineering Ullman’s - 6 steps oEngineering Your Future 10 steps oDifferent Companies use different models They all use some process Avoid “hobbyist approach” and inefficient project progress EPICS teaches a model that fits community- based designs

EPICS Design Process Six Phases 1.Problem Identification 2.Specification Development 3.Conceptual Design 4.Detailed Design 5.Production 6.Service/Maintenance 7.Redesign or retirement

The EPICS Design Cycle Specification Development Detailed Design Production Service Maintenance Redesign Retirement Problem Identification Conceptual Design Disposal

EPICS Design Process Six Phases 1.Problem Identification 2.Specification Development 3.Conceptual Design 4.Detailed Design 5.Production 6.Service/Maintenance 7.Redesign or retirement

Problem Identification Tasks – oIdentify problem oDetermine project objectives oDetermine motivation for project oIdentify outcomes or deliverables oDetermine duration of the project oIdentify community partner contact Deliverables - Project Charter

Specification Development Tasks oComplete users and beneficiaries analysis oDefine the customer requirements oEvaluate design constraints oDevelop engineering specifications oCompare to benchmark products (prior art) oDetermine design targets Deliverables- Project Specification Document

Conceptual Design Task oComplete Functional Decomposition of project oComplete Decision Matrix of requirements oDefine how users will interact with project oAnalyze/evaluate potential solutions oChoose best solution Deliverables- Project Conceptual Design Report

Detailed Design Tasks oComplete top down specification/ bottom-up implementation (freeze interfaces) oAnalysis/evaluation of project, sub-modules and/or components oPrototyping/proof-of-concept of project, sub- modules and/or components oField test prototype/get feedback from users oComplete DFMEA analysis of project oDetermine what user training is necessary Deliverables oProject Detailed Design Report oPrototype version of project

Production Phase Tasks oComplete production version of the project oComplete user manuals/training material oComplete delivery review Deliverables oDelivered project oProject Delivery Report oDelivery checklist oUser manuals

Service/Maintenance Phase Tasks oEvaluate performance of fielded project oDetermine what resources are necessary to support and maintain the project Deliverables oFielded Project Report Redesign or Retirement Decisions

The EPICS Design Cycle Specification Development Detailed Design Production Service Maintenance Redesign Retirement Problem Identification Conceptual Design Disposal

Seeking and Selecting Each phase of the design process has divergent (creative) steps and convergent steps where options are selected Diverge Seek Possibilities Converge Narrow Choices Problem Identification Specification Development Converge Narrow Choices Diverge Seek Possibilities

Generate Ideas Define Measurable Specifications Implement Test

Advancing Generate Ideas Define Measurable Specifications Implement Test Go to next phase

Iterating – going back Generate Ideas Define Measurable Specifications Implement Test Back to previous phase

Iteration and testing Prob ID Spec Dev Con Des Det Des Prod Main and serv. Document Why advanced Why interated

Design Record A design record is a (short) report of an engineering analysis that has been completed regarding your project. oThey should be named as follows: TEAM-PROJECT-SEM-Number (example SLAC-VLM-F04-1). Example activities recorded in a Design Record: oCircuit simulation oEducation materials oCAD modeling of project oSafety calculations oExperimental measurements oDesign rational: Why did you choose a particular design approach, algorithm, etc. oComponent selection: Why did you choose a particular component? Sr. Design Students should Author Design Records

Design Decision Table A table with summarizes design decisions which you have made. They should reference a Design Record. Design decisions could include: oArchitecture oAlgorithms oTools/Environment oComponent selection oMaterial selection
