3. Introduction If you did not know, Puerto Rico was discovered in 1493 by Spain and was Spanish property until 1898. We were named by the Spaniards and a great part of our development was done while being Spanish lead. In 1898 there was the Spanish-American War and Puerto Rico became property of the Americans.
