Bldg, Thurgood Marshall College) Sections: Voluntary Th 1:00-1:50; Th 3:30-4:30, Pepper Canyon Room 304 –Helps master sociological idiom and modes of explanation –Provides assistance with readings, writing essays that emphasize sociological explanations

Getting Organized, Readings and Lectures Readings: Course Packet for sale at Cal Copy, Holiday Court Lecture notes on line at: http://create.ucsd.edu starting Thursday http://create.ucsd.edu Weekly Reflections: 1-2 pages each week on readings and lectures; submitted in groups of 4

Exams and Projects Exams: One Take Home Midterm and a Take Home Final Exam Questions will ask for Sociological analysis (Go to Section!) –Midterm: assigned on Thursday of week 5, due on Tuesday of week 6 –Take home final –due exam week; or: Project

The Past The relationship between the political economy of US society and the organization of schooling at key historical moments— –Colonial (1789ff) agricultural > one room school house; –key function: “democratic citizenship” –Early Industrial (1865—1910) > “common school”; –key function: assimilation of new immigrants –Developed Industrial (1910-1950s): > “school as factory”; –key function: preparation for capitalism –The critique of the factory model

2. The Current Situation (1983- present) Many Reforms: –small schools, –charter schools, –private schools; voucher plans –local or school-site decision making –professionalizing the teaching corps
