French Revolution – 1789 monarchy to republic to dictatorship 1780s France is in debt from poor leadership of King Louis XVI 1780s Food shortages from famine, and people forced to pay high taxes 1789 Citizens attack a royal prison called the Bastille, and release prisoners 1789 New constitution makes all French citizens equal under the law 1792 Leaders of the French Republic execute King and Queen for treason. 1793-94 New leaders refused to tolerate disagreement and execute 17,000 1799 General Napoleon Bonaparte takes control to end “Reign of Terror” 1800+ Other European and world nations learn about France’s Revolution
