2 Physical Activity Definition: includes any form of movement-whether purposeful as in exercise and sports or recreation, or incidental, as when carrying out domestic chores.

3 Physical Activity Two main classes of Physical Activity – Lifestyle activities Forms of physical activity that are a normal part of your daily routine or recreation and that promote good health throughout a lifetime. – Sports activities Activities that usually involve competition and are guided by a set of rules.

4 Lifestyle Activities Biking Basketball Raking the leafs Walking the dog Hiking Walking to the bus

5 Sports Activities Individual Sports: Skills orientated sports that you can do by yourself. Partner Sports: Activities carried out with a partner, such as playing tennis or racquetball. Nature Sports: Activities in which there is some interaction with one of the elements of nature, such as surfing, rock climbing, sailing.

6 Choosing Activities Vary the activities – Less boredom – Works different muscles and systems – Helps reduce injury – Contributes to your total health

7 Skills-Related Fitness 6 measures – Agility – Balance – Coordination – Speed – Reaction time – Power

8 Agility The body’s ability to control the body’s movements and change the body’s position quickly.

9 Balance The ability to remain upright either while standing still or moving.

10 Coordination The ability to use two or more body parts together well, or to use the senses along with the body parts.

11 Speed The ability to move a distance or complete a body movement in a short period of time.

12 Reaction time The rate of movement once a person realizes the need to move.

13 Power The ability to use force with great speed.

14 Nutrition and Sports Food provides the energy necessary for top performance. Hydration: The addition of body fluids. – Dehydration Thirst is not a good indicator Thirst indicates body is already dehydrated One of the first signs is fatique.

15 Avoiding Harmful Substances Tobacco Alcohol Drugs Anabolic steroids

16 Increase risk of cancer and heart disease Sterility, or the inability to have children Skin problems, such as hair loss Unusual weight gain or loss Sexual underdevelopment and dysfunction. Violent, suicidal, or depressive tendencies.
